Hot off my presentation at Access DevCon, I’m starting a three month cycle at AccessUserGroups.org on how to use AI to analyze, make changes to and code new features.
Can AI make a difference with Access?
Yes! In particular when taking over someone else’s work, which is the most difficult thing to do. We frequently get hired to take over large industrial databases, in the past it would take us weeks to understand the code base, how it works, check for best practices, etc. Now we can use AI tools to get an immediate grasp of what we are dealing with and help us jumpstart our journey.
A great way to incorporate GIT into your development cycle
I’ve been a big fan of using GIT with Access, but in the past the solutions were clunky and time consuming, and frankly, not worth it. Not anymore. Using the Access Explorer Extension in Visual Studio Code, I’m now able to incorporate GIT into the process with ease.
This May we will be working on adding skills and using the PRD technique on customizing Access.
What about adding new features?
Although it’s possible to add new features, AI is better suited for planning, providing scripts to modify tables and helping with getting new features launched. We will explore how AI can help help with this process starting in our third meeting in June of this year.
What you will need to do the training
Please get the following prior to joining us on Tuesday:
- Visual Studio Code (Free)
- Python For Windows (Free)
- A PAID monthly AI assistant, for coding recommend Claude.
Why do you need a paid AI subscription?
The free version has severe limitations:
- It’s not the latest version of the software, there is a BIG gap between the paid version and the free one.
- As AI use grows, you are going to see more and more service disruptions as paid subscribers are prioritized over free ones.
