Some Microsoft Access users have recently reported an issue with the latest release of SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Access. If you are using the 32-bit version of Microsoft Access, the latest SSMA download may install or run the incorrect executable, resulting in a COM registration error.
This appears to be a known issue, and the SSMA team is working on a fix.

What Happens?
Users running the 32-bit version of Microsoft Access may notice that after installing the latest SSMA for Access (x86), Windows launches the application as a 64-bit process instead.
When this happens, SSMA may fail to start and display the following error:
Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID
{CD7791B9-43FD-42C5-AE42-8DD2811F0419} failed due to the following error:
80040154 Class not registered (0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG)).

Who Is Affected?
This issue appears to affect users who are:
- Running 32-bit Microsoft Access
- Installing the latest release of SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) for Access
- Experiencing the 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG) error when launching SSMA
Current Status
According to information shared with the Microsoft Access MVP community, the SSMA development team is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.
An updated release is expected later this July.
Temporary Workaround
Until the updated version becomes available, users may wish to:
- Continue using a previously installed version of SSMA if it is working correctly.
- Delay upgrading to the latest release if you rely on SSMA for production work.
Once Microsoft releases the updated version, we will update this post with any additional information if needed.
